Newsmax reports that according to a new statement from the American Heart Association, consuming up to five cups of coffee per day appears to be safe and may lower the risk of heart disease, stroke, heart failure, and type II diabetes.
Renowned cardiologist Dr. Chauncy Crandall told a Newsmax reporter he was happy about the news, as he personally enjoys coffee, but cautioned that, in his opinion, five cups was a lot. Dr. Crandall said, “Too much can give you palpitations, extra heartbeats, hypertension, even anxiety, or just plain nervousness. So, there is a sweet spot for everybody.” Moderation is the best approach, as five cups should not be the goal but rather the upper end of the guideline.
Dr. Crandall did credit coffee for providing some health benefits, in particular filtered coffee.
“Filtered coffee is probably better than all the other coffees because it pulls some of the oils out of the coffee that protect against elevated cholesterol,” he said. “So, I’m excited about the news. I recommend it to our patients, and we are trying to find that sweet spot,ā added Crandall, who is also editor of the popular newsletter Dr. Crandall’s Heart Health Report.
