For years, Sig Sauer has taken a beating, including a litany of lawsuits, over its P320 and the gun’s nasty habit of spontaneously discharging, often while still holstered. The first response from the Sig faithful was to blame the operator. But the problem kept occurring, and the issues were limited to the Sig P320 and no other model of Sig or brand of pistol.
The FBI lab rats took a look and came up with some plausible theories, but nothing definitive. There were lawsuits-a-plenty, some that Sig won, and some they did not. Many public ranges, not wanting the liability, don’t permit Sig P320’s on their range. Some law enforcement agencies have switched to another brand of weapon for their standard duty-issued pistols, and Sig remains committed to the position that their P320 does not spontaneously discharge.
Regardless what side of the fence you stand on, all agree that Sig has a PR problem, and sometimes the best solution is to move on and build something better.
It took over a decade, but that’s exactly what Sig just did.Although their website doesn’t state that they designed the P385 for the purpose of replacing the P320, I am willing to guess that for many it will be exactly what they needed to see to get them back on the Sig Duty Pistol wagon. That is great news for Sig, and for those of us that LOVE the P365 but wanted a less contentious full-frame option than the P320.
Introducing the Sig Sauer P385. Shawn Ryan just posted a video testing the new pistols, and after I saw him fire the P385 MACH3D with minimal recoil- smooth and accurate- I went straight to the Sig website to find the cost.
All of the new P385 models are listed on the site, but they aren’t yet available.
P385 Compact, P385 Carry, P385 Full, P385 Comp, P385 MACH3D
