If I were to tell you a story about a kid who was raised in an abusive home and who was involved in a highly restrictive religion that only served to turn him away from God, and that kid then embraced drugs and alcohol and all the trappings of the fast life, what would you expect to see in him today?
Throw in a few years in the Army where he served over two years overseas in a hotly-contested combat zone taking lives and losing friends, and what would you expect to see in him today?
Then add in the untimely death of his wife, and PTSD, and what would you expect to see in him today?
I sat down with my good friend Andres DeJesus, or Dre as we call him, because the man you would expect to see today is not the man I know and love and count on when the stakes are high and the chips are down.
Dre didn’t find Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ came to him and during this interview he tells the cryptic story of the night the devil came for his soul, and God saved him.
Dre gave his life to Christ and six years later the old Dre is long-gone and the new man is on fire for the Lord. He is a fixture in our church and an integral part of our church safety team. He is tasked with guarding the pastor. He also leads the recovery group at the church every Thursday night. He and his wonderful wife Bonnie lead a home cell Bible study group called a U Group, and they are both enrolled in the four-year Ministry Studies program offered through the church. Dre is a good and devoted husband and family man now, and an incredible friend. He is that guy you can call anytime for anything and he will be there for you.
The Lord redeems the soul of His servants,
And none of those who trust in Him shall be condemned
Psalms 34:22 NKJV
That is what God can do in life everyone has given up on, if they will just commit their life to Christ, and pursue God relentlessly.
